Intrauterine insemination

Recent studies indicate that the male factor is responsible for 40% of fertility problems in a couple. It is very important to have a sperm test done, as it is the easiest and least time-consuming test. Male testing may also include hormonal blood tests.

The Huhner’s Test or Post-Coital Test is an additional examination to assess the ability of spermatozoa to penetrate the cervical mucus, enter the uterus and then the fallopian tubes.

This test is performed during the estimated days of ovulation, after intercourse in the night before or the morning of the examination day. During the test, the doctor takes a sample of the cervical mucus and examines it under the microscope to assess the quality of the mucus and the presence of spermatozoa. If the result is poor, it is recommended proceeding to intrauterine insemination IUI.

The homologous IUI procedure is performed in the laboratory of the Clinic’s special reproductive medicine unit: the male partner provides sperm on the day of his female partner’s ovulation, which is then processed using a special culture fluid, and the seminal plasma is removed.

A small volume of highly concentrated spermatozoa with good motility is placed directly into the uterus, using a catheter.

Homologous IUI is used only in women with open fallopian tubes and increases the likelihood of conception for couples with a low sperm count with poor motility or a poor Uhner’s Test.

However, there are many cases of men who do not produce sperm. If there is no treatment for any of these cases, the alternative solution is heterologous intrauterine insemination: the sperm comes from a Sperm Bank, which is obliged to screen the donor’s hereditary background and health. It should be pointed out that, according to explicit legislative provisions, the donors of genetic material remain anonymous.

In order to choose heterologous IUI, the couple must be fully informed on the nature, purpose and consequences of this method.
