The GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) procedure is performed mainly in women with endometriosis or in the cases of unexplained infertility. It requires healthy fallopian tubes and provenly fertile sperm.
The GIFT procedure is different from in vitro fertilization in that, after transvaginal egg collection, 3-4 eggs are placed together with the sperm into the Fallopian tubes using a special catheter. This method imitates nature, as fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes, not in the laboratory.
GIFT is performed at "GENESIS ATHENS" in the operation room, under general anaesthesia and laparoscopy on the day of egg collection.
If more eggs are retrieved, they may be fertilised in the laboratory and stored in special liquid nitrogen tanks for future embryo transfer into the uterus.
The advantage of this method is that it combines assisted reproduction with diagnostic laparoscopy to identify the cause of infertility in an otherwise normal couple, which is usually endometriosis.
